Job description: Position Information

The Criminal Prosecutions Section investigates and prosecutes a wide range of criminal case that are referred by local District Attorneys Offices and state agencies. The cases range from misdemeanor offenses to homicide cases and complex financial crimes.

The Honors Fellow will work along-side experienced attorneys in the Criminal Prosecution Section. They will handle investigations and cases with senior attorneys and on their own as they gain experience in court. Case responsibilities include legal research and writing, presenting cases in the Investigating Grand Jury, motions practice, interviewing witnesses and preparing for court, attending court proceedings and appearing in Court to handle preliminary hearings, motions, bench and jury trials, sentencings and other related court proceedings. The Fellow will also have independent research and writing assignments for other sections in the Criminal Division. In the past, the fellow has assisted the Appeals and Legal Services Section and the Gun Violence Task Force.

This one year fellowship begins September 2023 and is considered at-will with no guarantee of employment for any specific term.

Examples Of Duties

  • Conduct legal research related to potential and pending prosecutions
  • Work with section chief to devise and implement prosecution strategy
  • Prepare motions, briefs, and other court papers in conjunction with trials, hearings, and other stages of prosecution
  • Prepare discovery requests
  • Assist in the investigation of criminal cases
  • Appear in Court and handles cases with a senior attorney
  • Counsel witnesses regarding case-related activities and interfaces with them regularly
  • Answer routine case-related correspondence
  • Perform additional and related work as required

Minimum Experience and Training

-Law students who are in their final year at an accredited law school and scheduled to graduate in the Spring of 2023 are encouraged to apply. Exceptions may be made for individuals actively participating in clerkships who have not held the title of “Attorney” in any capacity following graduation.

-Candidates must sit for the July 2023 Bar examination at the latest.
