Job description: Minimum Qualifications: Valid SC teaching certificate in acceptable South Carolina Department of Education certification area. Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills. Must possess an in-depth knowledge of instrumental music techniques and skills. Must possess the ability to instruct students in instrumental music and present them in performance as part of that instruction. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders.

Preferred: 3-5 years of experience as an instructor within a successful band program.

Job Goal: To create a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth in the field of instrumental music; establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop skills, behaviors, and knowledge needed to provide a foundation for future education in accordance with each student’s ability; to establish good working relationships with parents and other staff members.

Reports to: Principal

Performance Responsibilities: (includes but not limited to):

  • Instructs secondary students in developing knowledge and skills in instrumental music in accordance with district and state curriculum standards.
  • Motivates students to develop an interest in and an appreciation of the art of music.
  • Develops clear and concise instructional lesson plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of preparation, instruction, and rehearsal time.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities.
  • Uses a variety of instructional techniques and musical repertoire appropriate for the ages and skill level of students to include musical performance.
  • Presents concerts or programs as directed by the instructional needs of the students and the valid expectations of the community.
  • Encourages and assists qualifying students in ensembles, solos, and preparation for auditions such as All State Band, Solo and Ensemble and music scholarships.
  • Prepares and presents at least one band for the Instrumental Music Festival each year.
  • Recruits or assists in recruiting an adequate number of new studetns in proper instrumentation into the instrumental music programs to ensure its existence and to make continued improvement possible.
  • Plans in conjunction with the middle school band director(s), a consistent, comprehensive, and sequential 6-12 curriculum for all students in band.
  • Instructs students in the proper care and use of equipment.
  • Organizes storage areas and controls the use of materials and equipment to prevent loss, abuse, injury, etc.
  • Maintains an organized and workable inventory of all music, equipment, and uniforms related to the band program.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior and creates a safe, orderly, and effective learning environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
  • Engages a band camp in accordance with district and state guidelines to prepare and bring the marching band to an acceptable level of performance.
  • Fulfills all responsibilities of paper work such as inventory, purchase orders, instrument check-out, report cards, attendance, uniform records, music library records, and rosters.
  • Supervises classroom and students and volunteers.
  • Provides leadership to the booster club or parent’s organization for the enhancement of the program.
  • Accompanies and is responsible for the band’s performance at all scheduled events including home football games, band trips, and concert performances.
  • Active and productive member of the school’s faculty.
  • Meet standards set forth by State Department of Education Evaluation Process.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Physical Requirements: Requires light work that involves walking, bending, or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

Pay Grade: 220 days based Teacher Salary Schedule

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy and the State Department of Education Evaluation Process
