Decisions are guided by resource availability and functional objectives. Provides leadership for the Grid Modernization and Transformation process for Electric Utilities which includes ownership of the metrics, financials, and processes across the entire organization. Accountable for delivery of strategy and execution of PPL as the Distribution System Operator of the future to include DER (solar) Management, Electrification (to include customer Electric Vehicles), research and development in the use of advanced sensors and relays, and integration of an Energy Orchestration Platform. Provides oversight of business continuity for PPL EU as well as interfacing with external agencies, contractors, organizations, and other utilities. Responsible for coordination with internal Regulatory, Legal, IT, and Business Line organizations.

Responsibilities:

1. Develop and manage strategic direction and supporting business plans for PPL Grid Modernization and Transformation.
2. Identify best industry practices and future-leaning capabilities for implementation at PPL EU.
3. Provides leadership, direction, and communication for employees relative to key corporate messages and departmental issues, initiatives, and procedures such as safety, goals and objectives, work practices, and performance improvement.
4. Establish and monitor performance and production goals, objectives, and measurements that drive the organization to higher level of achievement. Drive toward a self-critical and continuous improvement culture; employee commitment.
5. Provide appropriate training and developmental programs to maintain a competent skilled workforce. Develop and implement staffing and hiring plans and provide key input to policies, procedures, and budgets.
6. Manage the primary interface between external stakeholders and the company in the areas of Distribution Grid Transformation, including regulatory representatives, ISO personnel, technological industry groups/partnerships, media, and vendors.
7. Direct projects and programs to implement management of Distribution Energy Resources, enhancing the operations of the distribution system.
8. Direct the integration of an Energy Orchestration Platform into PPL EU systems, integrating real-time PPL data, customer equipment data, and market data.
9. Direct PPL EU Electrification efforts, including Electric Vehicles, focusing on behind-the-meter customer data and customer vehicle charging infrastructure.
10. Direct PPL EU technology testing and R&D teams, providing strategic objectives for personnel to accomplish testing of technologies for deployment at PPL EU with the goal of a safe and reliable electric grid that incorporates two-way power flow.
11. Develop and direct all aspects of our roadmap to become a utility who is ever ready and prepared for the future industry landscape. This includes implementation and responsibility of Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), acting as a Balancing Authority on the distribution system, and other industry adaptations.
12. Develop and manage department strategies, budget, plans and set priorities to achieve goals and drive for results across the organization on key business initiatives. Approve decisions and manage budget.
13. Evaluate and approve new technologies and relay related software and updates, make decisions based on corporate strategies, and implement technologies to optimize resources and enhance the operations of the grid.
14. Directs the timely identification of risks and exposures that may affect the operations of the system consistent with regulatory requirements and good utility practice, initiation of appropriate remediation and exposure mitigation measures, including development of programs, and represents PPL EU at regulatory entities and industry peers.
15. Partner with business lines across the Distribution Operations to set strategies on critical operational initiatives and define execution plans. Partner with our Information Technology (IT) business line to prioritize IT projects that drive operational results and align IT support groups with business strategy related to the software packages this position is business owner of.
16. Develops departmental plans including business, production and/or organizational priorities. Responsible for creating and maintaining a safe work environment and organizational culture which encourages employee innovation, collaboration, commitment and is consistent with PPLEU values.
17. Recruits, trains, and retains a highly skilled, talented workforce; ensures technology is maximized and work-life balance is monitored while improving the relationships with other departments at PPL. Manages staffing performance and daily operations of the team; ensures attainment of company goals, objectives and initiatives by maximizing employees’ performance and development, leveraging industry best practices to drive best-in-class improvements.
18. Manage with other business lines within Distribution Operations to achieve safe and reliable electric distribution system performance, ensure all national codes (NESC, ANSI, etc), regulatory procedures and requirements are correctly interpreted, applied, and met.
19. If applicable, in-person supervision of employees to ensure compliance with FLSA wage and hour issues as well as to monitor compliance with safety rules.
20. The company reserves the right to determine if this position will be assigned to work on-site, remotely, or a combination of both. Assigned work location may change. In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited by ABET, or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent
2. Minimum of eight (5) years’ experience in functions relating to electric utility engineering, operations and planning
3. Leadership skills demonstrated by providing strategic direction to an organization, developing staffing and training strategies to improve a technical organization and collaboration with other business departments.
4. Innovation, appropriate risk taking and strong innovation focus. Psychological strength to make strategic decisions with limited information and manage multiple priorities.
5. Knowledge of protective relay schemes, DER operations, transmission, distribution, substation functionality, and industry status.
6. Financial management, personnel management, communication, business negotiation and decision-making skills.
7. Knowledge of both real-time and support computer systems for accessing power system information, customer information, and other operating data.
8. Knowledge of corporate models, procedures, and processes including budget preparation and tracking, safety, contract execution, procurement and administration.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Master’s degree in Engineering, or MBA
