The University of South Carolina’s University Health Services (UHS) is seeking a Financial Services Manager. This is an administrative position that is responsible for overseeing the financial services staff and managing the daily financial operations of a large physician group practice to include medical coding, charge entry, claims submission, payment posting, accounts receivable follow-up, reimbursement management and customer service. Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions):

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or business administration and 4 years professional accounting experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in healthcare collections and billing practices, computer systems, basic finance and statistical analysis. Health care experience in financial administration and health insurance billing. Work experience necessary to gain a full understanding of credit and collection functions, financial analysis and third-party payer procedures in order to effectively direct the functions and activities of the department. Supervisory experience in a healthcare setting is preferred. Administrative experience that includes budget preparation or monitoring and data analysis. Ability to sufficiently function easily in a variety of patient accounting and billing systems. Analytical skills necessary to examine patient accounts, detect and resolve problems relating to accounts receivable, and prepare and administer policies, procedures and budgets. Sound knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding. Working knowledge of Microsoft PC applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access). Ability to lead a team in a patient-centered team environment is preferred.


Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting, auditing, or financial management. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Knowledge of laws, regulations and policies overseeing business practices in a healthcare setting. Knowledge of office management and organizational concepts. Knowledge and experience working with Electronic Health Records. Should have the ability to proficiently apply mathematical concepts, plan and implement processes to ensure accurate billing and efficient collection/reconciliation of accounts. Should be able to develop, interpret and analyze financial data and reports. Experience with planning, assigning, reviewing and supervising the work of others. Outstanding leadership and organizational skills, time management and the ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, are critical to this position. Ability to analyze departmental systems and procedures. Ensures timely and accurate gathering of statistical data and key patient information. Manage staffing levels and workloads for effective and efficient workflow in all areas of the department. Assist patients with concerns and complaints and promote good customer service with patients and staff. Work effectively with patients, departments, physicians, outside providers and payers; and manages professional fee billing and collection. A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities: CFMS 1500 Medical claim forms. Should have knowledge of commercial, workers comp and occupational health insurance claim billing. Should adhere to strict confidential standards and those applicable of HIPAA, FERPA (etc.) and personnel disciplinary procedures.
