With our Agency’s mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, Public Safety division, 7901 Farrow Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.

As the IT Consultant I, working under limited supervision, you will provide solutions to end users computer and networking problems and user productivity. Assists user in trouble shooting and supporting software and hardware issues related to Law Enforcement.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Provides technical support; installation and applications for all computers used in Public Safety Division.
  • Develops and maintains the telecommunications/Dispatch/NCIC and all equipment in Central Dispatch.
  • Provides the knowledge and instructs users in the correct and proper care of equipment.
  • Performs the modifications and analysis of current equipment and make recommended updates and changes as needed.
  • Performs periodic tests, debugging, and installs updated operating systems software as needed.
  • Provides reports and analysis of equipment and communicates with Agency IT Division to ensure efficient and effective use.
  • Maintains and daily monitors the operations and functionally of all hardware and software with the Division. Installs and updates applications of computers in the design of voice, data networks, and website.
  • Monitors systems and recommends enhancements and upgrades of networks; desktops; for efficiency and troubleshoots ant systems, test, checks HTML errors and contents.
  • Creates a written policy and updates as needed based on storage of data, retention of files, and the specific network security requirements.
  • Provides user training on hardware and software specific to Public Safety, ensures staff is fully informed of all aspects of all systems and correct operating functions.
  • Responsible for all request for system access and security related issues.
  • Conducts evaluations, post-installations, and studies equipment performance as the subject matter expert prior to purchases to ensure the efficiency is maintained with current Law Enforcement equipment.
  • Recommends up-to-date software as needed.
  • Manages and responsible for system procedures related to troubleshooting, efficient back-up on equipment and resolve minor issues, while recommending corrective actions.
  • Provides proficient technical supports in Programming Tough Books, Watch guard, LAWTRACK, Power DMS, Microsoft Office Suite, PD Managers, APX Multi band console.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: A high school diploma and experience in office automation systems, data communications system design, installation, operations, repair, sales or marketing, or processing of information in a data processing environment or related systems, A degree in a related field may be substituted for the required on a year-for-year basis.

Agency Requirements: A bachelor’s degree and two (2) years’ experience in automated information or communications systems design, installation, operations, repairs, sales or marketing. Related experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis; or a high school and six (6) or more years in Information Resources, communications, programming, automated information systems. Must be able to pass law enforcement background investigation.
