The Lead Equipment Engineering Specialist leads and directs operations associated with quality servicing, repair, and preventive maintenance of assigned heavy off-track equipment and roadway machinery in and around shop facilities with 24/7 responsibility. Manages and implements best practices in safety, quality, and production within a defined budget. Ensures compliance with all Federal Railroad Administration rules and regulations. Develops, coaches, and trains assigned employees to promote safe operating practices and procedures complying with all Amtrak policies, rules, and regulations. Builds solid relationships with key parties and strives to align work processes with other departments within Amtrak. Is responsible for the creation of files for new equipment and for creating/editing/updating specifications for equipment. Collaborates with a variety of internal and external operations. This position will be required to work in Maximo, SAP, and Concur, as well as other Amtrak Programs.


  • Participates in joint meetings with Procurement, Finance and Vehicles for specification development.
  • Solves work related problems, makes decisions, and provide instructions to assigned employees.
  • Creates asset numbers on received equipment after specifications have been developed.
  • Compiles, maintain designations of tools, parts, and components necessary for the efficient operation and repair of equipment systems using systems such as Maximo and other Amtrak systems.
  • Conducts studies to establish standardized maintenance procedures and repair operations.
  • Considers significance of failures regarding safety hazards, cost of repair, loss or down-time of equipment resulting from such deficiencies as lack of available parts.
  • Declares equipment/machinery that is no longer economically repairable as excess to the system and recommend disposal.
  • Recommends equipment modifications to facilitate railroad operations.
  • Ensures operational readiness of equipment and railroad machinery in the areas of major maintenance, operational maintenance, services, and related administrative and supply management policies and procedures.
  • Completes repairs without impact to railroad operations. Observes actual repair and maintenance. Participates with shop personnel in working out the most efficient processes and procedures.
  • Provides technical equipment advice, recommendations and decisions on all maintenance and repair parts, assemblies, components, and subsystems.


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Operations Management, Transportation Management, or equivalent work experience and training in position of similar capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or familiarity with Amtrak programs such as Maximo, SAP, AOD, and Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills and proven problem-solving capabilities.
  • Qualified or possess sufficient experience to be qualified in RWP, AMT 2 and other applicable FRA regulations.
  • Must be able to interface with all levels of employees and both external and internal customers.
  • Must be skilled and experienced with MS Office, creating spreadsheets, presentations, memorandums, and utilizing other applications to perform job functions.
  • Demonstrated experience in all facets of equipment inspection, maintenance, and construction, as well as working knowledge of other crafts involved.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.


  • Master of Science Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Operations Management, Transportation Management, or equivalent work experience and training in position of similar capacity.
  • Five years of experience in railroad operations within the Roadway Equipment Department

The salary range is 104,250-135,100. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
