Full Job Description

Francis Marion University and the James A. Rogers Library invite applications for a Library Technical Assistant who, under the supervision of the Head of Reference, assists in providing reference, informational, and technical assistance to library patrons.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Provides direct user assistance at the Information Desk answering in-person, phone, and virtual chat queries. Provides quick and professional answers to basic and intermediate queries using online resources and the reference and general collections.

2. Answers informational and directional questions about library services offered, and about our facility and campus.

3. Interprets the Libraries’ online catalog and the PASCAL Delivers catalog to determine the location and availability of specific items.

4. Effectively identifies the patron’s information needs using effective listening and questioning skills for a positive interaction. Makes appropriate referrals to reference librarians or other library departments.

5. Facilitates the use of licensed resources, such as research databases.

6. Instructs patrons on the use of library equipment (printers, copiers, scanners, microfilm viewers, etc.) and the productivity software loaded on the library’s public computer workstations.

7. Ensures that items in the Reference and Serials areas are shelved daily and materials are kept in order and accessible to patrons and library staff.

8. Assists with the development of library guides and bibliographies.

State Requirements: A high school diploma and experience in library or clerical work.

FMU Preferences: Bachelor’s degree preferred. High School graduate and two years of library experience; or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Thorough knowledge of integrated library systems, its operations, processes, techniques. Knowledge of procedures involved in library operations or capacity to acquire such knowledge rapidly. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office. Ability to precisely follow systematic methods of work with a consistent degree of accuracy. Ability to operate various electronic devices, including PCs, laptops, photocopiers, scanners, etc.

Normal Working Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Modified summer hours.

State Classification: Library Technical Assistant (CD10)

Band/Level: 3/2

Salary: $26,869

Normal Working Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Monday – Friday). Summer hours will vary.
