Purpose of Job
The Mississippi Summer Transportation Institute (MSTI) 2022 Virtual Summer Camp will provide enrichment courses, labs, and activities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) academic and educational areas, as well as Job and Life Skills peer mentoring.
Scope of Responsibilities
Students Counselors will work directly with Project Director and Instructors to foster a sense of daily excitement and to help motivate student’s participation to engage and complete projects throughout the program.
Essential Job Functions
Student Counselors will assist in a wide range of educational and enjoyable activities to enhance program participants experience during their tenure in Alcorn State University’s MSTI Virtual Summer Camp.
Qualifications
Student Counselors will assist with team building exercises via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Activities will primarily consist of virtual presentations to give the students a tactile sense of the transportation industry and the diversity of activities and opportunities that it provides in terms of supporting society and as a career.
Assist instructors with on-going monitoring during lectures to ensure students are logged on and attentive.
Assist with reinforcement of activities and projects.
Assist with facilitating Life Skills sessions.
Provide individual assistance to students during break-out sessions.
The student counselor serves as a role model for others which includes assuming responsibility for creating an environment in which personal and social growth may occur.
Must possess leadership abilities in terms of interpersonal skills, sensitivity to others’ needs, assertiveness, enthusiasm, creativity, and good judgment.
The student counselor must be consistent in behavior toward all participants regardless of race, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and religion.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively.
Possess excellent organizational skills.
Demonstrate knowledge and skill in areas designated as STEM program areas.
Minimum computer skills.
