Job Summary: This is a full-time, non-tenure track position as a modified clinical instructor in the undergraduate nursing program. The candidate must have demonstrated medical-surgical clinical expertise with recent acute care experience on a medical-surgical, intensive care, or emergency/trauma care unit. The candidate is expected to provide leadership in teaching nursing through mentoring, guiding and remediating student clinical and simulation performance.

Job Duties: * Teaching students in the baccalaureate programs.

  • Implement innovative teaching strategies to foster student development of clinical practice and clinical judgment competencies.
  • Coordinate weekly pre- and post-conference lessons to align with and reinforce didactic content.
  • Supervision of pre-licensure nursing students in clinical care settings, skills lab, and the simulation center.
  • Provide didactic instruction
  • Serve as a role model for: the role of the nurse as a member of the healthcare team; compassionate communication with patients and families; professional behavior; professional appearance; effective interpersonal and transdisciplinary communication; and lifelong learning.
  • Provide constructive, substantive and supportive feedback to students.
  • Grade clinical paperwork and other assignments in a timely manner and provide substantive feedback for areas requiring remediation.
  • Communicate student progress with respective course coordinator.
  • Meet with preceptors to discuss student clinical progression.
  • Adhere to MUSC and College of Nursing policies.
  • Maintain proficiency as an educator.

Preferred Experience & Additional Skills: The preferred candidate will have: a doctoral degree in nursing or related field or be enrolled in a doctoral program; experience teaching clinical nursing skills, clinical judgment, and critical thinking; experience in didactic instruction; and experience in facilitating and debriefing simulation as a pedagogy.

Minimum Qualifications: Earned Master’s degree in nursing. Expertise in a medical/surgical clinical area. Effective interpersonal communication. Unencumbered, active license as a registered nurse in South Carolina or another compact state. Current BLS certification through AHA, ARC, or the Military Training Network. Recent (2-3 years) of actual patient care and/or supervision of students in clinical settings. This position works on-campus and with our clinical partner healthcare organizations and requires the applicant to relocate to the greater Charleston area upon accepting the position.

Formal Accountability: Reports to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Nursing Programs, the Lead Faculty for the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, and clinical course coordinators.
